Just as a response to this-
It wasn't THAT long ago that PHI was a 74 win team. The last 3 years (4 including this year) they've been great, but they only won 56 in '06 and 74 in '07. He turned it around really quick, and that's not easy to do, but it can be done. Same goes for NYM, with 61 wins in '07, 85 in '08, then 103 in '09.
The deal for Fulmer turned out to be nice for me obviously, but it's not like I got Conroy and Johnson for free. I dealt 3 solid pitchers to get those guys, which should help HOU work toward competing more now. It obviously also does help me as I accomplished my goal of getting younger in the minors, but it's not like I improved my team while stealing guys from one of the lower teams. Hopefully we both improved our team, which isn't a bad thing.
Teams trading their #1 pick (high ones, at that) for players that end up not helping them, and things like that...THOSE are the things that need to not happen.

Sorry ANA, a San Diego type team can never compete with a Colorado. Obviously the right move for them is to tank and get the #1 draft pick for 8 years in a row and they still won't have as much talent as Colorado. And, when a new GM finally comes in they will not have the eight sim years of experience that Colorado has and it'll be overwhelming. So basically I agree with Cincy.

I see plenty of opportunities for teams to compete. Free agency has been pretty solid except this last season. ML players are always available. The imports for each season adds more talent to the league, most imports are at the very lest 1st rd talent and some guys are top 5 picks. As teams improve they can get the extra comp pick for improving that gives the improving teams 3 picks in the top 45 of a draft. I think that is pretty solid to help teams compete. People love young talent and will trade good vets to get anything young.
And for Colorado, LA is coming!!!!
