It started at the end of last season with the tight NL West race. San Diego beat Colorado 12 out of 19 times including a 3 game sweep to close the season but it was the Rockies that snuck into the playoffs ahead of the Padres and on that final game on September 28th, despite the Padres winning their 6th straight, all against the NL West, it was the Rockies that knew that due to a San Fran win over LA that the Padres were eliminated. The tension from that game spilled into the offseason when newly signed Rockie Alex Rodriguez had choice comments about his former team, the New York Yankees. Fellow NY alum David Wells, now a Padres pitcher, lashed back at A-Rod, stating that his big attitude and paycheck clearly did nothing to help the Yankees in the postseason and can only imagine what the "thin mountain air in Denver would do to (A-Rod's) empty head." Rodriguez didn't take kindly to Wells' words and rebutted "Wells had his day in the sun already, its a shame it was raining. Time to make room for the REAL stars of the game." Wells chuckled about this over an interview with ESPN's Rob Dibble and replied "I'll make plenty of room for his two-sixty-six average, ha, as long as he makes plenty of room for my fastball up and in on the plate." No response has come back from Rodriguez or MLB, who may fine Wells for a comment suggesting he may intentionally throw at A-Rod. The Padres and Rockies meet in Denver in mid-April.

The rivalry started at the beginning of last season, but the Rockies ended it by winning the division. The Rockies come into this season, not sneaking into the playoffs for a second year but, dominating the NL West, and improving on last years record. recently aquired pitcher Cliff Lee had this to say: " I just don't understand why David Wells would be talking about how bad our players have done, I mean what did he do last year? We welcome his 8-10 record and 4.38 ERA into Coors field, I mean damn, if he plays us 4 or 5 times this year, it should be more towards the 7 or 8 ERA range." Also comments from another newly aquired teamate, Alex Rodriquez: "Wells, you threaten to throw it high and inside, well all I will do is take a step back as your old arm is coming across your body, wait for the 40 MPH Fast Ball to come to the plate, and smack that sum B*tch straight out of the Rocky Mountains son" This should upset the San Diego Padres, but with the additions of A-Rod, Alfonso Soriano, Mike Piazza, Valentino Pascucci, Bartolo Colon, Randy Wolf, Cliff Lee, Kirs Benson and Rookie SP Ian Snell, This Rockies team looks to impress.

Padres? Dude you finished 3rd in the division so shut your yap! I had the best divisional record and a 1/2 game behind your juicer team.
