Reports have just come in from Peter Gammons that a huge trade has gone down. The Arizona Diamondbacks have traded young sinker-baller Brandon Webb and 2B prospect Scott Hairston to the Texas Rangers for star 2B Alfonso Soriano and former first overall pick Adrian Gonzalez. The outlook of both teams has changed with this trade. The DBacks have added even more offense while Texas finally has a decent starter.

Peter Gammons is reporting that his sources inside the Cleveland Plain Dealer have clarified that the Indians General Manager Mark Shapiro has been in serious negotations with the man he replaced and current Rangers GM John Hart about SS Michael Young. Mark Shapiro asked to comment on the deal replied "I dont have any information on any negotations about Michael Young or any other Ranger." The Plain Dealer was able to reach John Hart and he replied "I don't wanna say anything is final yet, but both teams have some young guys that could really help each other out and a deal may be very close..." Peter Gammons goes on to say that he believes a trade will go down very soon. He thinks Mr. Shapiro may be tryin to throw a smoke screen to keep others from entering the bidding. This trade could happen within the next day.

The UCSL (Uncle Charlie's Sim league) messageboard is reporting a blockbuster trade between the Atlanta Braves and Detroit Tigers. Two very big names switching teams here as Pudge Rodriguez, one of the best catchers in baseball is heading to the Braves to anchor their staff and SP Russ Ortiz comes over to the Tigers. The Tigers acquire their much wanted staff ace, although at a pretty hefty price. The Braves also recieved SP Jason Johnson to replace Ortiz, and sent Johnny Estrada the Tigers way to replace Pudge. Also swapping from Atlanta to Detroit are OF Rondell White and AA shortstop Kelly Johnson.

Peter Gammons reports that the recent drop in amount of trades completed is due to the fact of the upcoming Spring Training games and most teams wanting to see how their teams fare. Also many teams have already acquired the parts they think they need, or dealt the guys they wanted to get rid of. He also reported that many teams are still active in the market and expect to see some more deals before the season gets underway.

Reports from the Baltimore Sun claim that Orioles GM Peter Angelos, despite being busy fighting the Expos move to D.C., and despite already trading away CF Luis Matos, has been actively persuing the acquisition of a Padre CF. Peter Gammons reports that given Mato's youth and potential, the speculated deal must involve Jay Payton, who is currently unhappy serving the Padres in a utility role. "The Orioles simply don't have much to offer to land a superstar CF, so a guy like Payton seems to be the a good fit."

Speculation in St. Louis is that they are starting to toy with the idea of trading SS Edgar Renteria. Rumor has it that there have been 2 teams in the NL West that have expressed interest in the former all-star SS. Gaining a bat like Edgar's would greatly help one of those teams gain an advantage in gaining the division crown.
